Microbiod

The sustainable lignocellulosic microparticles

Microbiod technology provides sustainable alternatives to traditional microplastics and microparticles, with applications in cosmetics, personal care products, and diagnostics. The Microbiod project is a Research to Business project funded by Business Finland with a mission to commercialize sustainable lignocellulosic microparticles.

Microplastics are commonly used in a wide range of products, from cosmetics to cleaning supplies. These tiny plastic particles can provide many excellent features to final products, but they also have a dark side: they are polluting our environment. They are ending up in our oceans and rivers, where they are being ingested by fish, other marine life, and eventually by all animals and humans.

Our background is based on the years-long research on advanced lignocellulose materials at the University of Oulu.

Solution

Our innovative solution is based on lignocellulose resources and it promotes the reduction in the use of non-renewables. We are proud to have been the winner of the StoraEnso international innovation competition, recognizing the potential of our technology to make a positive impact on the environment.

Lignocellulose is an inexpensive and abundant material obtained from various biomasses, making it ideal for mass production and commercial use. Our unique approach combines functional lignocellulosic ingredients to form high-performing and green nanoparticles.
